Without
a doubt, email has been the most important communication development of
the past decade. Just ten years ago, virtually no one used or, for that
matter, even heard of email. Today, everyone, from the world's top CEOs
to ninety-year-old grandmothers, uses email to communicate cheaply and effectively
with people from around the world.
Because
of the massive volumes of emails sent and received, the rules of communication
have changed. No longer is it absolutely necessary to use perfect grammar
and spelling or formal style guidelines when communicating with colleagues
and associates. At Exceptional English, we call this new written
English "emailese," and we are completely in favor of relaxing
the rules of written English when communicating with friends and well-known
associates.
However,
when communicating with someone that you do not know, the old rules still
apply. For example, every day we receive emails from freelance editors
wanting to join our outstanding team. Our human resources staff uses the
quality of the email as a simple screening tool to separate the good from
the not-so-good. Often, we do not even open résumé attachments
for applicants who send a poorly written email. And you can believe us
when we say that we are not the only organization in the world that makes
snap judgments based upon the quality of an email. Everyone, from your
potential customers to university admission officers to the publisher
of your local newspaper, uses this technique to decide if he or she will
act upon your email.
If
you want to create quality email that will impress your recipient, our
editors can help. They are experts at crafting a message that is clear,
succinct, and grammatically correct while adhering to the original focus
of your email. We use editors from a cross section of specialties for
our email editing, and we will ensure that the editor working on your
email is knowledgeable in the subject of your correspondence.
